#405 Flowing with the Chan Clan

Shannon’s guests today on this week’s episode of the Bruce Lee Podcast are her actual family members – Andy, Christie, and Julie. They are Shannon’s first cousins and the children of her father’s sister - her Auntie Agnes Chan! They all live on the east coast and though they haven’t spent much time together in their lives, they all have a huge affection for one another as you’ll come to see. This episode will release at a time when many families are gathering together here in the US, sharing time and good food so it is a happy coincidence that Shannon will share her little family reunion with all of you during this time.

So let Shannon tell you a little about her cousins…

Dr. Andy Chan, is an accomplished urologist who is also a JKD practitioner under a student of Jerry Poteet’s. Andy lives in Long Island with his family. His three kids, Zachary, Tyler and Alexandra are all accomplished fencers thanks to dad’s deep interest in jkd – with Tyler competing on a national level at the junior Olympics and Summer Nationals.

Christie Chan practiced real estate law for 12 years in NYC before moving with her husband Tom and two kids, Lucy and Molly, to coastal CT, where they currently reside. She has worked as a grant writer and currently works counseling prospective law students and guiding them through the law school admissions process.

Juliana Wong (or Julie) is 25+ year veteran of the fashion industry. She has designed and consulted for various companies including Jones Apparel Group, Bloomingdales, Neiman Marcus, and David’s Bridal. She has collaborated with celebrity designers Zac Posen and Randolph Duke on independent projects. Juliana currently lives in Northern NJ with her husband Jon, raising their two teenage kids, Jacqueline and James.

Christie, Julie, and Andy and Shannon haven’t seen each other in person in many, many years, but they hope to rectify that next year with a visit! Check out their bios for more detailed information about Shannon’s awesome cousins and see lots of great photos in these show notes! And please enjoy as they reminisce and share some family memories with all of you on this episode of the Bruce Lee Podcast.

Get to Know Andy, Christie and Julie

Dr Andrew Chan was born in California and raised in Long Island, where he attended SUNY at Stony Brook graduating with a B.S. in biochemistry and sociology. He went on to receive his medical degree at NYU School of Medicine where he developed an interest in the surgical subspecialty of urology. Andrew completed his residency at Boston University Medical Center. He furthered his training with a fellowship in endourology at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center/Harvard Medical School. He was awarded second place in a national contest by the Endurological Society.

One of Andrew's few interests outside of medicine is his appreciation and practice of JKD with sifu Steve Psihos, a student of Jerry Poteet.  The understanding that JKD incorporated the principles of fencing and boxing led to the deep involvement of foil fencing with his three children, Alexandra, Zachary and Tyler.  Tyler currently fences on a national level, competing in the Junior Olympics and Summer Nationals.  Andrew and his family currently reside in Long Island, New York.

Christie Belknap practiced real estate law for twelve years in NYC before moving with her husband and two children to coastal CT, where she currently resides. Always looking for creative ways to use her law degree, she has worked as a grant writer and currently works at 7Sage Admissions where she counsels prospective law students and guides them through the law school admissions process. When she’s not working, you can find Christie planning her next family trip, tinkering with recipes, or walking her obliviously happy dog, Scout.

Juliana Wong is a 25+ year veteran of the NYC fashion industry, she has designed and consulted for various companies including Jones Apparel Group, Bloomingdales, Neiman Marcus, and David’s Bridal. She has collaborated with celebrity designers Zac Posen and Randolph Duke on independent projects. Juliana has always had a love for travel and culture and her career has given her the opportunity to explore many different parts of the world, ultimately sharing this passion with her family. Juliana currently lives in Northern NJ with her husband Jon, raising their two teenage kids, Jacqueline and James.
